By Bridget Rutherford A TWO storey multi-unit development has got the go ahead in a tree-lined Somerfield street, in spite of fierce opposition from residents. Multay Developments plans to build four two-storey units at 23 Studholme St. Residents rallied to fight the development earlier this year because they said it would take away the street’s family-orientated appeal, privacy and the neighbours’ sun. But because of district planning rules, the development has now got the green light. Originally, Multay Development’s application featured three aspects not compliant with the District Plan. A hearing earlier this year decided consultation with some neighbours would be needed as part of the resource consent process. But city council head of resource consents John Higgins said Multay Developments had since amended its plans to fully comply with the District Plan. •Turn to page 5

Residents in Somerfield have been lobbying against an apartment complex, which they say will take away privacy and sun. But it got the green light from the city council because the District Plan says it’s okay. In some good news, the Port Hills will be well represented in the country’s 52nd Parliament. Labour’s Ruth Dyson, National’s Nuk Korako and the Green Party’s Eugenie Sage will all get another term in Wellington. Although a special congratulations must go to Ms Dyson for securing her hold on the electorate. She is now one of the longest serving MPs in Parliament, so she must be doing something right. – Sophie Cornish

News Sitting MPs still hold power By Sarla Donovan ALL THREE of the sitting MPs in the Port Hills electorate have made it back into Parliament. Ruth Dyson increased her 2014 election night majority to retain her electorate seat for a fourth term. She has now been in Parliament for 24 years, making her one of the longest-serving current MPs. The 2017 campaign had been the most exciting she’d been involved in, she said. “The level of interest, especially from young people, has just been great. I like it when people are passionate about their community and their country, wanting to improve things, and we’ve had all of that during this campaign.” Labour was about 800 votes behind National in the Port Hills electorate party vote, which was a “huge lift” on 2014’s result. Green MP Eugenie Sage, who is third on the list and also the party whip, returns to Parliament after the Greens attracted 5.9 per cent of the party vote. Ms Sage was with party faithful at the Lyttelton Arts Factory on Saturday night. “We were optimistic we would

get returned to Parliament, though it is bittersweet in terms of seeing caucus colleagues like Denise Roche, Barry Coates and Mojo Mathers no longer with us; we’ve got a substantially reduced team,” Ms Sage said.
“But we’ve been this size before and championed a lot of issues and we’re looking now to see if we can get a coalition and change the Government.” It was “too soon” to speculate on whether she would put her
hand up for the co-leader position vacated by Metiria Turei. Ms Sage plans to continue championing clean waterways and rivers and working out ways to deal with the effects of climate change. Meanwhile, Port Hills residents will continue to see Nuk Korako’s mobile office parked around the electorate, after he was returned at No 42 on the party list. National gained 46 per cent of the party vote on Saturday night, although this may change slightly by the time special votes are counted on October 7. Mr Korako attended a National Party function at Chateau on the Park on Saturday evening. He said the strength of National’s party vote in Christchurch wasn’t a surprise. “I thought it would be more, on the basis of our record, particularly in Christchurch.” While he was saddened to see the demise of the Maori Party, there was now an opportunity to build National’s engagement with Maori through Kahurangi Blue, a National Party group focused on Maori policy issues, said Mr Korako.

The community board will discuss the names for four roads in Awatea Park and Quarry View. City council staff have recommended the names Romanee Lane, Muirhill St, Pegson Lane and Foden Lane be approved. SKATE PARK DESIGNS All detailed design and specifications for both proposed skate parks in Halswell are complete. The external planner for the project is working through the final background check for the resource consent. When the consent is lodged, the project will go out for tender. Construction for the skate parks, which will be at Halswell Domain and Knights Stream Park, is expected to begin in mid-November. They will both be ready for use by early 2018.

Paintball Team New Zealand to back fundraiser attack in Cashmere By Sophie Cornish and Andrew King PEDESTRIANS, vehicles and property were the target of paintball gun attacks last week and over the weekend in Cashmere. Police are looking for a Blue Ford Ranger, possibly an early 2000s model with a canopy on the back, in connection with a number of incidents in Cashmere and New Brighton, where paintball guns were discharged. The attacks began on Wednesday last week. Sergeant Jim Currie said it was a very serious matter and they needed to catch who was responsible before someone was badly hurt. “They just don’t realise the damage they can do or injuries they can cause. It is classed as a firearm, so a very serious offence,” he said. Pedestrians, vehicles and properties were fired on in Cashmere at the weekend, Sergeant Currie said. The New Brighton drive-by shootings on Lonsdale St, Keyes Rd and Marine Pde saw green and yellow pellets fired at cars, fences and homes. Lonsdale St resident Samuel Kent heard a loud bang and discovered a window had been smashed from a paintball gun pellet. Paint was splattered on his curtains and windowsill. Mr Kent said several properties were hit along his side of the street on Wednesday night. The New Brighton Club was also hit six times on the same night. Its windows required professional cleaning. Anyone with information about the paintball attacks should phone police on 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Musician hits the streets GETTING OUT on the streets is an inspiring way to find out about people’s lives, says folk singer Adam McGrath. The frontman of local band The Eastern has been spending time with his guitar and laptop at different sites around the city for a project he’s calling The Sit. McGrath received funding from the city council’s Enliven Places Projects Fund for his plan to gather stories from everyday people he meets. Making coffee and tea on a gas cooker and serving dried fruit and a few other snacks, McGrath has been in Woolston, the central city and Linwood. He will now head to New Brighton. And after spending a week at each of the four locations around the city, he plans to record the songs he’s written on location. In the summer, he and The Eastern will perform free concerts at three of the four sites – opposite the Peterborough St Library, in New Brighton, and in Linwood. “It’s been really inspirational, not just musically but also as a person, just talking to people and feeling the commonalities. So many people and so many different walks of life but these common things keep repeating themselves,” he said. There have been some memorable moments, such as when a seven-year-old taught him a song she’d learnt at school. A few weeks into the project he’s already written several

songs. “There’s been a lot of people talking about loss and in that moment of loss finding something within themselves that carries them through, and balances out the loss. That’s been really nice and really cool, because I’m troubled, as we all

Studholme St resident Marty Flanagan said they still wanted to fight the development, but it would have to go through the courts and that could be costly. The site used to be home to a three-bedroom bungalow. But following Marty Flanagan the earthquakes, the zoning on that side of the street was changed to residential suburban density transition as part of the new District Plan. The zone allows for higher density development. “All of these got snuck through the District Plan change just after the earthquakes and it wasn’t really communicated clearly enough,” Mr Flanagan said. He said the District Plan gave all the “power” to the developers. “It’s going to turn Somerfield into a Riccarton or a Sydenham,” he said.

She said it will devalue her home and cost her privacy and
quality of life. City councillor Phil Clearwater said both situations were “unacceptable” and he wanted a change in legislation allowing the District Plan to be altered. Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board chairwoman Karolin Potter said both situations were terrible. “You can’t call them houses, they’re just future dumps. Huge, blocky, ugly and horrible,” she said. “It’s bloody hard when the District Plan allows it to happen.”

Fresh from capturing the under-81kg elite title at the New Zealand Boxing Championships last week, the 28-year-old was then using his verbal jab to defend people in the district court last Monday. “I actually didn’t have too many bruises when I turned up for work on Monday, which was a good thing,” he said with a cheeky grin yesterday. Teki-Clark fought Tyson Sykes, of Rotorua, for The George Bush Memorial Trophy – the same opponent he took on last year and lost. This year he won on points. “He told me after the bout,
you were too sharp Sunny. He has mentioned turning pro but I would like a decider before he does that,” he said. Teki-Clark fights out of Bells Boxing Club on Rose St, Somerfield. Originally from Wanganui, he said he spent his high school years playing rugby, but boxing was never far from his mind. He studied law at Canterbury University and now works for the Public Defence Service, taking on clients who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law. Teki-Clark’s reputation has done the rounds, with some of the people he defends asking him if he was a boxer. “I have never had a client actually assault me. Plus I’m quite tall so that might put them off.”

And one day Aidanfield resident Amy Huang, will be on the list of alumni. The 19-year-old has flown to the United States to take up a place in the fine arts programme, based in Providence. Ms Huang will be able to cross-register her classes against the same offered at the Ivy League Brown University. And the Rhode Island school wasn’t her only option in the states. Ms Huang was also accepted into Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, which Andy Warhol attended, and she made the waiting list for Harvard University. “The Rhode Island School of Design is well known and respected for its arts faculty, in fact it is probably the most prestigious university in that area

A requirement of the programme is that each year the students undertake a project for their wider community. This year the schools elected to come together and work together at the Charlesworth Reserve, a 20ha area of land between Linwood Ave and Humphries Drive. Restoration of the area as a wetland began in 1991. Since then over 100,000 trees, shrubs and marsh plants have been planted at this site. This is an important habitat for native wetland birds. Students demonstrated what they have learned about respect for their community and respect for their environment while also role-modelling how to be leaders.

Message from the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. The school is thriving at its inner-city campus location alongside the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Barbadoes Street. Marian College shows us clearly that the heart of a Catholic school lies not in its buildings, but in a strong, supportive community built around faith. Marian College belongs to the Catholic Kāhui Ako Community of Learning, one of our 13 schools in Christchurch. Each school has an affiliated parish and networks contributing to the Diocese. Alongside our Diocese earthquake rebuild and repair programme, our parishes have been offered the chance to focus on spiritual renewal as we wait for a new Bishop to be appointed. The process for the rebuild of Marian College’s campus will be a priority for our new Bishop, who will ultimately make the decision on Marian College’s permanent site. This decision will not be made in isolation however, there are many factors to consider and groups to consult with, given the changes in our communities since the earthquakes. The Diocese looks forward to keeping the community updated on progress. In the meantime, Marian College continues to achieve excellent results and to thrive. Feast Day Festivities One of the most anticipated events on the Marian College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day began with a whole school Mass, which included the blessing of the new music department, featuring practice spaces and a multipurpose room. Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete in a talent quest and house group chant competition. Rivalry between the four Marian College houses – Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition. Each performance is judged and awarded house points which are tallied throughout the year. The house with the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural, service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving.
Aiming for France
Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) could be heading to France next year to represent New Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup. The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the Oceania Football Confederation championships in Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France, 2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five game campaign which saw the team win all their games convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns development squad and has played with Mainland Pride (the National Women’s regional team) for three years.
Judo medallist Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term. She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two categories at the Auckland International Judo Open tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds!
Wellbeing and service A priority for Marian College this year has been student and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing, character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and developing study and life skills. The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian women. Especially for year 12 students, the course teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers, financial literacy and service. Marian College has a strong commitment to providing service to the community. Not only students, but staff members are also actively involved. Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of service activities including assisting at Christchurch City Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach, gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other children in need.
Southern Jam Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s Christchurch Jazz Festival.

with spring planting By RACHEL VOGAN As the days get longer and the soil slowly begins to warm up and dry out, the time is right to set about growing your own greens to feed the troops.
POTATOES The first sprouted potatoes can go in the ground now in the warmer climates. If your soil isn’t ready, grow an early-crop in large tubs or potato planters. This option will yield just as well as growing in the ground, and enable you to tuck the pots up against the house to protect them from cold snaps. Early-crop varieties to plant now include ‘Jersey Benne’, ‘Rocket’, Swift’, ‘Cliff Kidney’, or ‘Liseta’. Remember to enrich the soil with potato food!
PEAS Peas are a super quick and easy crop to grow, and have the advantage of being remarkably hardy to cold temperatures. They prefer a fertile soil in full sun, and would benefit from a supporting frame or series of stakes to keep the crop off the ground. Sow seed directly in the garden where you wish it to grow, allowing 10-15cm between each plant. I put two seeds in each hole. Cover the area with mesh or netting as birds just love to peck at fresh pea shoots as they emerge through the soil. Once the plants reach 15-20cm, the leaves don’t seem to have as much appeal, so the nets can be removed. They are a great crop for tubs and planters, and dwarf varieties are wonderful in hanging baskets or window boxes. Plant plenty, as once they come ready, you never seem to have enough.

RADISH Crisp and zingy, everyone has room to grow these nuggets of goodness. All you need is a kitchen bucket, some vegetable mix and seeds, and you’ll be in business. Why not grow them at work if you have a sunny outdoor space? It could make for a fun inter-office challenge, with prizes on offer for the biggest, smallest, ugliest, tastiest and funniest-shaped radish! Personally, I prefer the round marble to golf-ball-sized types, although the cylindrical varieties do get a lot bigger and therefore give you more bang for your buck. Sow from seed now in rows, or try sowing them in a circle or a pattern – kids love doing this. Note that you won’t find radishes in punnets, as they are very difficult to transplant without damaging the roots, so planting in a seed line is definitely the best way forward.
ROCKET Rocket, or arugula, is one of the fastest-growing and tastiest salad greens around. It is the epitome of a low-maintenance crop; you can scatter seed directly onto the ground and walk away, and will be greeted with seedlings within a few weeks, and harvestable leaves only a fortnight to a month later. Plants are widely available all year round. If the soil dries out in summer, the plant will bolt and go to seed, so perk up old, tired soil with sheep manure or compost before planting in order to avoid this. It’s an ideal resident for the patio and window boxes near the kitchen, and if you keep picking it without allowing it to flower, it will crop for up to six months or more, as long as the soil remains fertile and regularly watered. For Canterbury people, the name Musgroves is synonymous with recycled and pre-loved building materials and household items that can happily find a place in their new or renovated home. Founded by Dave Musgrove in 1942 as a general cartage company, it became Musgrove Bros when Dave was joined by his brother Alf in 1946. The business operated as a cartage and road contracting company until 1970. The previous year, when the management was taken over by Graeme Vickers, the company’s work had extended to include demolition and the sale of recycled materials. Demolition continued for a number of years, before Musgroves began to specialise in buying and selling recycled building materials. Since those early days, the product mix has evolved, and there are now many different types of product carried by Musgroves, general manager Sue Brown says. Volume has expanded significantly too, with some 70,000 items now on the yard at any one time, including new and pre-used.

“We’re here to help people with their renovations. Many of our items are materials left over from building jobs, such as insulation, roofing iron, trellis etc. “The pre-used items people bring in include items such as doors, ranchsliders, windows, and kitchen units. And there is a huge selection for customers to browse through.”
Those building new homes and wanting to add character to a contemporary design may choose to install tongue and groove flooring made from recycled timber, or use old door and cupboard handles or locks, Sue says.
Of course there are the special treasures, too. One Sue is particularly thrilled with is a series of large oak ceiling panels, each in four sections, which came from an architecturally designed home, and lay unused for seven years before they were taken to Musgroves.
With new building products continually being developed and replacing existing ones, the range at Musgroves is constantly changing and growing. One example, says Sue, is ACM (aluminium composite) panels, which are waterproof so are ideal for bathrooms and create a unique effect.
Another unusual item is a large, four-door oak entertainment cabinet, which Sue says could be an eye-catching feature piece in someone’s new or renovated home.

changes & celebrations for 60-year-old school The blessing ceremony
These are significant times for the longestablished Sockburn School in Springs Road, Hornby. This year the school is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and next year will mark the first step of a major change. In January 2018, the school will be given a new name – Wigram Primary, and this will be in preparation for the school’s relocation to the Wigram Primary site on the Runway in January 2019, principal Heather Walkinshaw says. Detailed design of the new school is currently underway, with construction to be carried out by Southbase.

“Southbase has had recent experience with new school builds, and will bring their expertise to the build,” Ms Walkinshaw says. “Work on the new school is expected to start in January 2018.”

The school has a great sense of community. Everyone works very well together. The staff are dedicated to the success of all students.’”
LOOKING BACK… The first headmaster of Sockburn Public School when it was established in1957 was Mr A. R. Chambers. A photo from the time shows there were 11 teachers, a clerical assistant and a nurse.
The school will also have a new uniform with a new logo, which is now being embroidered on to the new uniforms.

The logo, which features two kahu facing each other with the runway through the middle, has been designed to represent the history of the area. Kahu were prevalent in the area and the runway recalls the history of the air force at Wigram.
The first school committee was formed in 1957 and the iconic school pool, which was opened in1961, is still used by the students.

Gorgeous Food can also cater for lunches, morning teas and afternoon teas, with the food being boxed up and ready for collection as required. Since last year, Gorgeous Food has been opening on Saturdays from 7am - 1.30pm, and this has proved very popular with their regular customers, Jo says.

ongoing development at business park Hornby’s Waterloo Business Park continues to grow at an impressive rate, bringing increased business activity to the area. In driving through the park, there is a palpable sense of activity and momentum owing to the large number of sites currently under construction. “Waterloo reached its tipping point sometime in the past 12 months,” assistant development manager Joel Webber says, “where we gained a critical mass of sales and construction activity that marked a transition from large, burgeoning industrial subdivision to an active and dynamic business environment. “On the back of this transition, the focus of the development team at Waterloo has squarely shifted to completion of the two remaining stages of development,” Mr Webber says.

Despite an unusually wet winter, work on the $195 million Christchurch Southern Motorway – Stage 2 (CSM2) project has not been held up, with more than 300,000 cubic metres of earth moved, two new local roads built and the first of eight bridges almost complete.

residential groWth set to continue in the west The residential population of Christchurch’s western suburbs has grown significantly since the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and that growth looks set to continue for some time. A number of subdivisions have already been developed across the area in response to that growth, with more coming on stream over the next few years. One new one being developed is an extension to the existing Country Palms subdivision in Halswell, which was established prior to the earthquakes by development company Suburban Estates. “That one was well received and sold quickly,” company manager Tracey Watson says. “The new development is smaller, with 100 lots. The first stage, comprising 33 lots, has just been released, with the remainder to be released over the next couple of years.” Section sizes range from 400sqm to 700sqm, with access through the existing Country Palms development.
“The subdivision has access to good infrastructure, with the opportunity to have access to Halswell Junction Road, and there are good facilities all within a kilometre,” Ms Watson says. A newcomer to the Christchurch market, Avanda Group, is developing a site at 197 Halswell Junction Road. Planning and design work has started and civil engineering work will get underway once designs are finalised, marketing manager Sarah Davidson says. The existing plan for the development includes 197 lots, with section sizes ranging from 300sqm to 650sqm. “There is an allowance within the plan for a small number of integrated housing lots, should the demand for such products develop over the course of the sales programme,” Ms Davidson says. She says Avanda has spent a number of months speaking to active parties in the market, and listening to what purchasers want.
“This information has been at the forefront of our decision making. We are in the process of appointing a local urban design and landscape architect team to assist in the design of the layout and the treatment of outdoor spaces to make 197 Halswell Junction Road a welcoming community,” Ms Davidson says. “Avanda chose to develop in Halswell as it is a growing and popular community that we wanted to be part of. There is a demand for good-sized sections in the area. “We hope this will be the first of many developments in Christchurch for Avanda.” Several other subdivisions in the area have had council consent. There are 205 lots over three subdivisions in Awatea Rd, Carrs Rd and Halswell Junction Rd. A further 634 lots across four sub divisions in Sutherlands Rd, Halswell Junction Rd, and Milns Rd are currently subject to a subdivision consent application.

The brand-new Design Centre set up last month by Jennian Homes in Main South Road Hornby provides a showcase for industry-leading building products that the public can “see, touch and feel”, says co-owner Dwayne Prendergast. “This is a completely different concept,” Dwayne says. “People can see a lot more in our Design Centre than they can in a show home. “The product selection includes state-of-the-art kitchens, bathrooms, plumbing products, exteriors claddings and much more, with all the proven brands represented.” Jennian Homes sales staff are available on site to talk to visitors about any of the products, and discuss how they can be incorporated into a Jennian Homes design. “We offer a range of standard plans, but we enjoy designing bespoke homes for clients to suit their section and their ideas. the trickle-doWn effect By ROSS KIDDIE I’m a big motorsport fan, Formula One in particular. Even though Ferrari as a team is giving Mercedes-Benz a run for its money this season, the latter has dominated the sport in recent years. Ultimately, that success trickles down to sales from the showroom floor. That is certainly showing here in New Zealand. Mercedes-Benz is dominating the luxury car market and I don’t see that changing any time soon, simply because the raft of models and variants within each model range means there is a vehicle for all tastes and budgets. There is also a large proliferation of sporty models and the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz – AMG – has kept up the pace with high output models sitting in tandem within the line-up. I’m not sure how inspired AMG is from Formula One, but you can rest assured that some technology from the sport flows down to street vehicles. The latest AMG model to come my way was the C63S cabriolet, which has a twin-turbocharged 4-litre V8 engine delivering monster power outputs of 375kW and 700Nm of torque.

However, when sport mode is selected, there is a constant solid surge of power that seems endless in its delivery. Acceleration is vivid – a standstill to 100km/h time of 4.2sec is wickedly fast, along with a 3.2sec overtaking time (80km/h to 120km/h). What I enjoyed most about the C63S’ performance is the sound that accompanies its delivery. It is loud and there’s even a button that enhances more noise; a backfire on gearshift and throttle blip on downshift is infectious to listen to. On that subject, drive is channelled to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. It is a direct shift-type and how it harnesses so much power and torque yet arranges the gears so smoothly amazes me. There are steering-wheel-mounted paddles for the enthusiastic driver, and management protocols, which quickly identify throttle percentage.

One of the benefits of quality tyres is the feel through the steering, the C63S cabriolet has accurate turn-in along with strong feel – you can point and clip apexes delightfully. It must be said, though, the C-Class in this form is so competent it makes driving easy, the suspension is informative and that creates an involving driving experience. It is also rigid within the body structure. Like most premium manufacturers, MercedesBenz and AMG haven’t lost sight of the need to look after the environment, and even though the engine has big cylinders to feed, the fuel usage statistics are still realistic. Mercedes-Benz claims a 9.4-litre per 100km (30mpg) combined cycle average. At 100km/h I recorded an 8l/100km (35mpg) instantaneous
readout along with a 11.2l/100km (27mpg) average over five days. However, a buyer who chooses C63S specification in any vehicle will understand that the quad-camshaft V8 likes to be released and fuel economy wouldn’t be a priority. At $189,000 the C-Class cab in this form comes at a premium price but it is chock full of goodies and, as you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, it wants for nothing. I’ve been quite spoilt recently with a lot of German product filtering through the press fleet – as well as soft and hard-tops from other brands – serving to prove the convertible market is showing no sign of dwindling. I’ve long said Christchurch doesn’t have the best weather for open-air motoring and I stick to that statement; that being the case, the coupe would be the car for me, but for anyone who gets to experience that amazing engine, there’s a chance they will be simply over-awed.

Even though the area of maximum torque is high at 4000rpm, the Mazda2 is light and it doesn’t take a lot of energy to move it quickly (0100km/h in 9.5sec) – the engine is unstrained and responsive. The Limited rides on 185/60 x 16in Dunlop tyres, and even though their footprint isn’t wide they have a solid tenure with the road surface and provide the driver with strong feedback as to how they are reacting under pressure. The Mazda2 has reasonable freedom of movement within the suspension, the spring and damper rates favour the uneven surface of Christchurch’s roads, while occupant comfort has been an engineering priority. Christchurch is a tough market for Mazda2. There’s some fairly hefty competition here from Suzuki and its clever marketing campaign. However, Mazda also has a free servicing programme, which is most tempting – three years or 100,000km. All factors considered, the Mazda2 is a compelling buying proposition.

The Salvation Army Family Stores throughout the country are well known as places to find quality second-hand items of all kinds, from clothing and books, to toys, furniture and crockery. Generous people in the community donate the items, with the organistaion using the proceeds from the sales to fund their wide range of charitable activities. There are two Salvation Army stores in the Addington area, one in Lincoln Road and the other in Poulson Street, with the proceeds from the Poulson St outlet being used to run their long-established hostel, which caters for males struggling with life. “The hostel accommodates males from the age of 18 or 19 upwards,” Salvation Army spokesperson Natasha Campbell says. “They come from all walks of life, and having time there allows them to reintegrate back into society. Their accommodation is fully equipped and they get three square meals a day.”
The hostel is completely full at present, with residents allowed to stay for a maximum of three months. The Poulson St store sells furniture, bedding and children’s toys, which people can drop off at the store. “We are always in need of good-quality mattresses, sheets and blankets,” Natasha says. Donated sheets and towels are also used to supply the hostel and we are especially in need of towels, she says. Many of the items sold at the Lincoln Rd store are newer and include clothing, nick nacks, collectibles and a wide range of household items. The stores are located at 62 Poulson St and 300 Lincoln Rd and staff are always very pleased to accept items in good condition that people no longer need.

Earlier in the year, I wrote about the principle of collaboration and its importance to our students as they prepare for the global world in which they will live their lives. This is because the global world requires effective interaction with others. IQ alone is not enough. Our Emotional Intelligence (EI) – also matters. I also discussed that we now know through neuro-science that IQ-smartness is not fixed but can grow. Effort makes us stronger. In schools this is sometimes called ‘growth mindsets’. For more information on this please see https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/ I raise these points again at the end of Term 3 as our focus even more tightly centres on our senior students’ success in their Yr 11-13 Career Pathway and for the juniors, their Year 7-10 Learning Pathway.

Meet the Mayor Nineteen Linwood College students attended the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Award Ceremony with the Honourable Lianne Dalziel, Christchurch’s Mayor. This prestigious event was held at the Mayoral Office.
The Year 11 production, ‘Harbouring Ghosts’ was a fantastic, eerie performance. Through this, students explored the healing of past mistakes. It was then the Year 12/13 classes' turn to take the stage. They tackled an adaption of Hamlet, ‘Ophelia Thinks Harder’. This was an extremely challenging performance which students handled with finesse.
We congratulate these students on their efforts and again thank Chris Allan from the Joshua Foundation for his mentorship and tremendous commitment to Christchurch youth.
In 2016, twelve Linwood College students acted as extras in ‘The Changeover’, a movie filmed and set in Christchurch’s Eastern suburbs.

Prom Night 2017 For many Seniors the 2017 ‘American Prom’ was the highlight of the year’s social calendar. Magic was in the air and everyone was dressed to the nines - dancing the night away with flashing tambourines and Mickey Mouse ears. It was truly a special occasion, full of smiles,
friendship and laughter and one which our students will never forget. Staff working at Twiggers said that it was a pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable occasion. They were extremely complimentary towards our students’ positive demeanor.

SPRING ONION PANCAKES Ingredients 250g Plain flour, plus extra for dusting 80 ml Boiling water 70 ml Cold water 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil 1 bunch Spring onion, finely chopped 1 tsp Sesame seeds Directions Put the flour in a bowl and add the boiling water, stirring with chopsticks. This is called ‘burning’ the flour. Give it a mix
and once it has cooled enough, continue mixing with your hands. Add the cold water, a quarter at a time, and continue mixing. When mixed thoroughly, take the dough out of the bowl and knead on a flour-covered bench. You may need to add more flour as you knead. Continue kneading until the dough is shiny and your hands and the bench are clear of dough. Roll the dough into a ball and place in a bowl covered with cling film. Seat aside for about half an hour. Take a piece of dough about the size of your fist and roll it out on the bench into a circle about 15cm in diameter. Spread some
vegetable oil over the dough, then sprinkle over the chopped spring onion. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds. Roll the pancake into a tight cylinder, then coil it around into a circle (like a caterpillar rolling itself into a circle). With a rolling pin, flatten this circle into a pancake again. Add oil to your frying pan and heat to a medium-high heat. Add the pancake to the frying pan and fry until golden, then flip and cook the other side until golden and crisp. Preheat the oven to 180 deg C fan bake. Combine the first 10 ingredients in a bowl. Mix in one egg. Divide mixture evenly onto four sheets of pastry, taking care to ensure you leave some space on each edge (about 2.5cm) for easy rolling. Lightly beat remaining egg for egg wash and brush the edges to help seal the pinwheel. Roll each sheet from the long end and cut each into four pinwheels with a sharp knife. Melanoma Deadlier Than Road Fatalities Summer is around the corner, and it brings with it the temptation for some to “pre-tan” using artificial UV tanning equipment; but is it really worth the risk?
M
ore people die from melanoma each year than are killed annually in road crashes. This statistic was part of a comprehensive submission made to parliament’s Health Select Committee which is considering outlawing sunbeds for people under the age of 18 years. The submission was made by Accuro Health Insurance, established in the 1970s as a private insurer for the public health sector. Today it trades as a private health insurer with a widespread, general membership. Accuro, in supporting the submission made by the New Zealand Dermatological Society, pointed to a New Zealand Cancer Society figure of 324 deaths from melanoma in 2010. According to the NZ Road Transport Agency there were 253 road deaths for the 12 months to February 2014 and 303 for the 12 months to February 2015. In highlighting the figure, CEO Geoff Annals emphasised the serious nature of the disease and his submission drew the committee’s attention to the financial, social and personal costs of skin cancer. He quoted Cancer Society figures which report that New Zealand, along with

The Cancer Society further reports that skin cancer currently costs this country about $123 million annually. Geoff Annals says research by the Centre for Disease Control showed the introduction of seat belts reduced serious crash related injuries and deaths by about half and banning artificial UV tanning services is warranted on the same public health grounds as the compulsory seat belt legislation. While Accuro’s submission related to a ban for people under 18 years, it supports the introduction of a total ban on commercial artificial UV tanning. “As a health insurer grounded in the public health sector, we are strongly committed to supporting the effectiveness of publicly funded health services and better health outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Geoff Annals says. A leading New Zealand dermatologist, Dr Louise Reiche, who also made submissions to the Health Select Committee, says she’s

It’s great on the weekend to see all the various women visit the show, from teenagers to business women, mothers to grandmothers and friends simply enjoying each other’s company. It’s becoming more common for us to see three

Renee Murray from Expo Organisers, NZME Events says “We will be bringing a fabulous experience to the women of Canterbury for one weekend.
